Tridacna derasa, known as the Derasa Clam, is a prized large clam species favoured by marine aquarium enthusiasts for its impressive size and striking mantle patterns. At 14cm, this clam is a mature specimen that can add vibrant colour and natural beauty to a reef tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Derasa clams require stable water parameters and strong lighting to thrive.
Lighting: High-intensity lighting is essential as Tridacna derasa hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae algae that require ample light for photosynthesis. Metal halide, T5, or high-quality LED lighting systems are recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal. Too strong a current can stress the clam, while stagnant water may reduce oxygen exchange.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, but supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and health.
Placement: Place on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Avoid areas with excessive sediment or strong currents.
Compatibility: Reef safe with caution. Generally peaceful and compatible with most reef inhabitants, but avoid housing with clam-eating fish or invertebrates.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and low nutrient levels.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 30cm in captivity, but 14cm specimens are considered medium-large.
Tridacna derasa is a spectacular addition to mature reef tanks, offering both aesthetic appeal and biological interest. Proper husbandry ensures longevity and vibrant colouration.
