Trochus histrio is a robust and effective algae-grazing marine snail, widely appreciated in the marine aquarium hobby for its ability to help maintain clean rock surfaces and glass. This species is suitable for reef tanks due to its reef-safe nature and compatibility with a variety of invertebrates and fish.
Care and Husbandry: Trochus histrio thrives in well-established marine aquariums with stable water parameters. They require a minimum tank size of 75 litres (approximately 20 gallons) to ensure adequate grazing area and water quality. Ideal water conditions include a temperature range of 22-26°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and stable pH around 8.1-8.4.
These snails are primarily herbivorous and will graze on algae films, diatoms, and detritus. Supplement their diet with dried seaweed sheets (nori) or specialised herbivore pellets if natural algae growth is insufficient. Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Trochus histrio is considered reef safe and can be kept alongside corals, anemones, and other invertebrates without risk of damage. They are peaceful and non-aggressive, making them excellent additions to community reef tanks.
Placement and Behaviour: Place Trochus histrio on live rock or aquarium substrate where algae growth is present. They are active grazers, often seen moving slowly over surfaces during the day. Ensure tank mates are non-predatory to avoid stress or harm to the snails.
