Tridacna gigas, known as the Giant Clam, is one of the largest and most visually striking clams available for marine aquariums. This 10-12cm specimen is a captivating addition to large reef tanks, prized for its vibrant mantle colours and impressive size potential.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Giant Clams require stable water parameters and strong lighting to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, relying on intense lighting to sustain their symbiotic algae. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can be beneficial, especially for younger specimens.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Reef safe. Tridacna gigas is peaceful and compatible with most reef inhabitants but requires placement away from aggressive corals or fish that may nip at its mantle.
Lighting Requirements: Very high intensity lighting is essential, ideally metal halide or high-output LED systems, to support photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is preferred to avoid mantle damage while ensuring nutrient exchange.
Placement: Securely positioned on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area. Avoid areas with strong direct flow or aggressive tank mates.
Tank Size: Minimum 300 litres recommended due to the potential adult size and water quality needs.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can exceed 120cm in the wild, but typically smaller in captivity.
