Tridacna derasa, known as the Derasa Clam, is a prized invertebrate for marine aquarium enthusiasts seeking a striking and sizeable clam species. At approximately 15cm, this clam displays beautiful mantle patterns and colours that enhance any reef tank.
Care Level: Moderate care is required to maintain optimal health. This species demands stable water parameters and strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna derasa benefits from intense lighting but will also appreciate supplemental feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods to promote growth and vitality.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: This clam is generally reef safe and compatible with most reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide sufficient space and stable water conditions. Moderate water flow is ideal to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while avoiding strong currents that may stress it.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable substrate or rockwork in a well-lit area of the aquarium, ensuring it receives ample light exposure without direct strong currents.
With proper care, Tridacna derasa can be a long-lived and visually captivating addition to your marine aquarium.
