Tridacna derasa, or the Derasa Clam, is a prized addition to mature marine reef aquariums. Known for its elongated shell and striking mantle patterns, this clam can grow significantly larger in the wild but is offered here at a manageable 16cm size, perfect for experienced hobbyists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to thrive.
Lighting: High-intensity lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is recommended to ensure adequate gas exchange and to prevent detritus accumulation around the clam.
Feeding: While primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna derasa benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where it can attach securely. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at its mantle.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe with caution. Generally compatible with most reef inhabitants but avoid housing with species known to nip at clam mantles, such as certain angelfish or butterflyfish.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water conditions and accommodate growth.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Can reach up to 30cm or more in optimal conditions over several years.
