Tridacna derasa, or the Derasa Clam, is a majestic giant clam species highly sought after by marine aquarists for its impressive size and stunning mantle patterns. At 13cm, this clam is a medium-sized specimen that will become a striking focal point in a mature reef tank.
Care and Husbandry: Derasa clams require strong, high-quality lighting such as metal halide or high-output LED systems to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae. Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to ensure proper gas exchange without damaging the delicate mantle tissue.
Placement should be on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where the clam can securely attach itself. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or in areas with strong direct flow. Regular water quality maintenance is essential, with stable parameters and adequate calcium and alkalinity levels to support shell growth.
Feeding: While Derasa clams primarily rely on photosynthesis via their symbiotic algae, they can also benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Tridacna derasa is reef safe and generally peaceful, making it suitable for reef aquariums with non-aggressive tankmates. Avoid housing with large predatory fish or invertebrates known to nip at clam mantles.
With proper care, Derasa clams can live for many years and grow significantly larger, becoming a magnificent addition to any premium marine aquarium.
