Sepia bandensis, commonly referred to as the Dwarf Cuttlefish, is a medium-sized cephalopod prized for its remarkable camouflage abilities and interactive behaviour. This species is ideal for advanced marine aquarists who can provide the specialised care it demands.
Care Level: Due to their sensitivity and specific needs, Sepia bandensis requires an experienced keeper familiar with cephalopod husbandry.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 80 litres is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and environmental enrichment. The aquarium should have a secure lid as cuttlefish are known escape artists.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-26°C, salinity at 1.024-1.026 SG, pH between 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to mimic their natural habitat.
Diet: Sepia bandensis are carnivorous and thrive on a diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as small crustaceans, shrimp, and fish. Feeding should be frequent, typically once or twice daily, to support their high metabolism.
Compatibility: This species is best kept singly due to territorial behaviour and predatory instincts. They are generally reef safe but may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so caution is advised when housing with other tank inhabitants.
Special Care: Provide ample hiding places and a sandy substrate to allow natural burrowing and camouflage behaviours. Regular water changes and excellent filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
