Sepia bandensis, commonly known as the dwarf or stumpy-spined cuttlefish, is a captivating cephalopod prized by marine aquarium enthusiasts for its intelligence and unique behaviours. This large variant requires careful husbandry and is best suited to experienced keepers.
Care Level: Intermediate to advanced. Cuttlefish demand stable water conditions and specialised feeding.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of live or frozen crustaceans such as mysis shrimp, small crabs, and shrimp. Regular feeding is essential to maintain health.
Compatibility: Sepia bandensis is generally solitary and can be aggressive towards conspecifics or other tank inhabitants. Best kept singly or in a species-specific setup with ample space.
Reef Safety: No. This species is not reef safe as it may prey on small invertebrates and fish.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and to accommodate its active nature. A secure lid is essential as cuttlefish are known escape artists.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 22-26°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places with live rock or artificial caves to reduce stress. Open swimming areas are also important.
Special Care: Cuttlefish have a short lifespan (typically 1-2 years) and require careful monitoring for signs of stress or disease. Avoid sudden changes in water quality and ensure a varied diet to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
