Parupeneus cyclostomus, known as the Large Indian Goatfish, is a visually captivating species native to the Indo-Pacific region. This fish is renowned for its distinctive barbels used to forage along sandy substrates, making it an engaging addition to a marine aquarium.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This species requires a well-established tank with stable water parameters and ample space to exhibit natural behaviours.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial tendencies towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with plenty of hiding spots.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on benthic invertebrates. Offer a varied diet including live or frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised carnivore pellets.
Minimum Tank Size: 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) or larger to accommodate its active swimming and foraging behaviour.
Reef Safety: With Caution. May disturb small invertebrates and soft corals while foraging; not recommended for delicate reef setups.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide a sandy substrate with ample live rock for shelter and foraging. Ensure open swimming areas.

Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and maintaining excellent water quality are essential for the health of this species. Avoid housing with aggressive tank mates to reduce stress.
