The Snowflake Moray Eel (Echidna nebulosa) is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its unique black and white spotted pattern and manageable size. This species typically reaches a maximum length of around 40cm (16 inches), making it suitable for medium to large aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This eel requires a secure aquarium setup with a tight-fitting lid to prevent escapes, as moray eels are known for their ability to slip through small openings.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards other morays or similar species. It is best kept singly or with non-aggressive tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and prepared frozen foods. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night when the eel is most active.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate swimming space and hiding spots.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally safe with corals, the Snowflake Moray Eel may prey on small fish and invertebrates, so caution is advised in reef setups.
Placement and Habitat: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and caves for shelter. The eel will spend much of its time hiding and hunting from these secure locations.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef conditions.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Additional Notes: Regular water quality monitoring and stable parameters are essential for the health of this species. Avoid sudden changes in water chemistry and temperature.
