The Echidna nebulosa, commonly referred to as the Snowflake Moray Eel, is a popular choice among marine aquarium enthusiasts due to its unique black and white pattern and manageable medium size. This species can reach up to 60cm in length and is best suited for aquarists with some experience in keeping predatory marine fish.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This eel requires a secure aquarium setup with a tight-fitting lid, as it is known to escape through small openings.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Snowflake Moray Eel can coexist with larger, non-aggressive fish but may prey on smaller tankmates. It is best kept with robust species and avoided in reef tanks with small invertebrates or fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped fish, squid, shrimp, and specialised frozen marine preparations. Feeding should be done 3-4 times per week.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended for a medium specimen, with plenty of live rock to provide hiding places and crevices. Water quality should be stable with parameters typical for marine aquariums: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, and moderate water flow is preferred to mimic natural reef environments.
Placement: Provide ample hiding spots within the rockwork to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviour.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 60cm (medium size).
