Echidna nebulosa, commonly referred to as the Spotted Moray Eel, is a captivating addition to a mature marine aquarium. This species is renowned for its distinctive black and white spotted pattern and its nocturnal, shy nature.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This eel requires a well-established tank with stable water parameters and secure rockwork to prevent escapes.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful towards other fish but can be territorial with conspecifics or smaller tankmates. Avoid housing with small fish or invertebrates that may be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet of meaty foods such as chopped seafood, crustaceans, and specialised frozen preparations. Feeding should be done in the evening to match their natural nocturnal feeding habits.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 150 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and hiding spots. Secure lids are essential as moray eels are known escape artists.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking their natural crevice habitats. Water flow should be moderate to ensure good oxygenation without stressing the eel.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and caves for shelter. Position the eel in a quieter section of the aquarium to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 60 cm in length.
