Parupeneus barberinus, commonly referred to as the Indian Ocean Goatfish, is a captivating addition to larger marine aquariums. Recognisable by its elongated barbels used for foraging, this species actively searches the substrate for small invertebrates, making it a fascinating fish to observe.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established tank environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets. Regular feeding encourages natural foraging behaviour.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide enough swimming and foraging space.
Reef Safe: With Caution. While generally compatible with reef setups, they may disturb small invertebrates and dig in the substrate, so caution is advised in sensitive reef environments.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No specialised lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow to mimic natural reef conditions.
Placement: Provide a sandy or fine substrate to allow natural foraging with barbels. Include live rock for shelter and to support a healthy microfauna population.
Origin: Indian Ocean region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
Regular water changes and stable water chemistry are essential for maintaining health. Avoid housing with aggressive species to reduce stress.
