Parupeneus barberinus, known as the Large Goatfish, is a fascinating addition to mature marine aquariums. Recognisable by its elongated body and distinctive barbels used for foraging, this species adds both activity and colour to your tank.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires a well-established aquarium with stable water parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but may show territorial behaviour towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a large tank with ample space to reduce aggression. Compatible with other non-aggressive marine fish.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Tank Requirements: Minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) recommended to provide sufficient swimming space and substrate for natural foraging behaviour.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal.
Placement: Provide a sandy or fine substrate area for the goatfish to root around with its barbels. Include rockwork and hiding places to reduce stress.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 30 cm (12 inches) in length.
