Inimicus didactylus, commonly known as the small scorpionfish, is a captivating species prized for its vibrant, premium colouring and intriguing behaviour. This ambush predator is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care requirements and venomous spines.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended. This species requires stable water parameters and a well-established aquarium.
Temperament and Compatibility: Inimicus didactylus is generally solitary and territorial. It can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates, so it is best housed with larger, robust tankmates. Avoid keeping with small or slow-moving species.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this scorpionfish feeds primarily on live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, crustaceans, and shrimp. Regular feeding with high-quality protein sources is essential to maintain health.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space for natural behaviour and territory establishment.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting and gentle to moderate water flow are ideal. This species prefers areas with some shelter and subdued lighting to mimic its natural habitat.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places on the substrate where the fish can camouflage and ambush prey. Ensure the aquarium has a sandy or fine gravel substrate to allow natural resting behaviour.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 15 cm in length.
Additional Notes: Exercise caution when handling due to venomous spines. Always use appropriate tools and avoid direct contact.
