The Zebra Lionfish (Dendrochirus zebra) is a captivating addition to any marine aquarium, prized for its distinctive zebra-like stripes and elaborate fin rays. This scorpionfish species is a slow-moving predator that thrives in well-established tanks with plenty of hiding places.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its venomous spines and predatory nature, it is best suited to experienced hobbyists.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally solitary and territorial, the Zebra Lionfish can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates. It is recommended to keep it with larger, robust tank mates that are not small enough to be considered prey.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feeds primarily on live or frozen meaty foods such as shrimp, small fish, and crustaceans. Regular feeding 2-3 times per week is advised to maintain health.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory. The aquarium should have moderate water flow and subdued lighting to mimic its natural reef habitat. Provide plenty of rockwork and caves for shelter and ambush hunting.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While it may coexist in some reef setups, it poses a threat to small fish and crustaceans and should be introduced carefully.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches).
