The Queen Angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) is a spectacular addition to large marine aquariums, admired for its brilliant blue and yellow coloration and distinctive crown-like markings. Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, this species is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its size and care requirements.
Care Level
Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament and Compatibility
Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in a large tank. Compatible with other robust fish species but avoid smaller, timid fish.
Diet
Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Supplement with sponges and other natural foods to mimic their wild diet.
Minimum Tank Size
At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and territory.
Lighting and Water Flow
Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef conditions without stressing the fish.
Placement
Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas and maintain stable water quality.
Origin
Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size
Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in length.
