The Queen Angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) is one of the most visually stunning angelfish species available for marine aquariums. Recognisable by its brilliant blue and yellow colouring and distinctive ‘crown’ marking on the forehead, this species is a true showpiece for large, well-established reef or fish-only tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. The Queen Angelfish requires stable water conditions and a mature aquarium environment.
Temperament and Compatibility: This species can be semi-aggressive, especially towards other angelfish or similar-shaped species. It is best housed singly or as a mated pair in a large tank. Avoid keeping with very small or timid fish to reduce stress and territorial disputes.
Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and marine algae. Supplement with sponges or sponge-based foods to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 250 litres (approximately 65 gallons) is recommended to accommodate its adult size and swimming needs.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting is suitable. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate natural reef currents without causing stress.
Placement: Provide ample live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure the tank is well-aquascaped to reduce territorial aggression.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Maximum Size: Up to 45 cm (18 inches) in length.
Due to its size and care requirements, the Queen Angelfish is best suited for experienced marine aquarists with large, mature aquariums. Regular monitoring of water quality and diet is essential for maintaining health and vibrant colouration.
