The Queen Angelfish (Holacanthus ciliaris) is a visually striking species prized for its brilliant blue and yellow hues and distinctive crown-like markings. This XXL specimen is suitable only for advanced marine aquarists due to its size and care requirements.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive, the Queen Angelfish can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks. It is best housed with other large, robust fish species and avoided with smaller, timid fish. Compatibility with invertebrates is limited, so caution is advised.
Diet: Omnivorous by nature, this angelfish thrives on a varied diet including high-quality marine angelfish pellets, frozen mysis shrimp, spirulina, and marine algae. Regular feeding of meaty and plant-based foods supports vibrant colouration and health.
Tank Requirements: Due to its potential size of up to 45 cm (18 inches), a minimum tank size of 500 litres (approximately 110 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour. A well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding is essential.
Water Conditions: Maintain stable marine parameters with a temperature of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, pH between 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow. Regular water changes and high water quality are critical for this species.
Reef Safety: Not reef safe. The Queen Angelfish may nip at corals and sessile invertebrates, so it is best kept in fish-only or fish-plus-live-rock setups.
