Chaetodon lunulatus, commonly known as the Crescent Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its distinctive crescent-shaped markings and elegant swimming behaviour. This large butterflyfish is best suited to experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised care needs.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and a mature reef environment.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or as a mated pair in larger tanks.
Diet: Omnivorous. In the aquarium, provide a varied diet including high-quality marine flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised preparations containing sponge and coral polyps to mimic natural feeding habits.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (approximately 40 gallons) or larger to allow ample swimming space and territory.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. May nip at coral polyps and sessile invertebrates; suitable for reef tanks with robust corals and adequate hiding spaces.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef lighting and moderate water flow to replicate natural habitat conditions.
Placement: Mid to upper water column. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 20 cm (approximately 8 inches) in length.
Due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity, Chaetodon lunulatus is recommended for aquarists with experience in maintaining butterflyfish and stable reef systems. Regular monitoring and a varied diet will help ensure longevity and vibrant health.
