Chaetodon larvatus, commonly known as the Vagabond Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its distinctive black and white markings. This medium-sized butterflyfish is a captivating addition to larger marine aquariums, offering both beauty and interest.
Care Level: This species is best suited for experienced marine aquarists due to its specialised dietary needs and sensitivity to water quality. It requires a mature, well-established reef tank with stable parameters.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar species. It is compatible with other non-aggressive fish but should not be kept with overly aggressive tank mates. Avoid housing with small invertebrates as it may nip at them.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for sponges and benthic invertebrates in the wild. In captivity, provide a varied diet including high-quality frozen mysis shrimp, marine algae, specialised sponge-based preparations, and marine flake or pellet foods to ensure nutritional balance.
Tank Requirements: Minimum recommended tank size is 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to provide ample swimming space. Maintain stable water parameters with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and excellent water quality.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, replicating natural reef conditions. Moderate water flow is preferred to simulate its natural habitat without causing stress.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. This species appreciates a reef environment with diverse coral structures but should be monitored for any coral nipping behaviour.
Origin: Native to the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
