Chaetodon larvatus, commonly known as the Larvatus Butterflyfish, is a visually stunning species prized for its bright yellow body contrasted with bold black markings. This small butterflyfish reaches up to 15 cm in length and is native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean.
In the marine aquarium, the Larvatus Butterflyfish requires a mature, well-established tank of at least 150 litres to thrive. It prefers a habitat rich in live rock to graze on natural algae and small invertebrates. This species is best suited to experienced hobbyists due to its specialised diet and sensitivity to water quality.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but can be territorial towards conspecifics or similar butterflyfish species. It is compatible with other non-aggressive tank mates but should not be housed with overly aggressive fish.
Diet: Omnivorous with a preference for sponges, tunicates, and small benthic invertebrates. In captivity, offer a varied diet including specialised frozen foods, marine algae, and high-quality prepared diets formulated for butterflyfish.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at coral polyps or sessile invertebrates, so monitor closely if kept in reef aquaria.
Care Tips: Maintain stable water parameters with regular water changes. Provide ample hiding places and ensure a peaceful community environment. Avoid sudden changes in diet or water conditions to reduce stress.
