Overview: Calappa spp., often referred to as box crabs, are intriguing marine invertebrates known for their distinctive, box-like carapace. These crabs are a captivating addition to marine aquariums, especially for hobbyists interested in unique crustaceans.
Care Level: Moderate. Calappa spp. require stable water conditions and specific feeding routines to thrive.
Feeding: These crabs are carnivorous scavengers and benefit from a diet of meaty foods such as chopped molluscs, crustaceans, and sinking pellets formulated for carnivorous invertebrates. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night when they are most active.
Compatibility: Calappa spp. are generally peaceful but can be predatory towards smaller invertebrates. They should be housed with non-aggressive tank mates and not with very small or delicate species.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While not typically harmful to corals, they may prey on small invertebrates and disturb substrate-dwelling organisms.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water parameters. They prefer a sandy or fine substrate to allow natural burrowing behaviour.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow is ideal to mimic natural conditions without causing stress.
Placement: Provide ample hiding places such as rock caves or crevices. Ensure the substrate is deep enough for burrowing.
Origin and Size: Various species within the genus Calappa are available; exact origin and maximum size vary. Typically, small to medium specimens range from 5 to 10 cm across the carapace.
