Overview: Calappa spp., often referred to as box crabs, are distinctive marine crabs known for their rounded, box-like carapace and specialised claws. These medium to large invertebrates are intriguing additions to marine aquariums, appreciated for their unique appearance and nocturnal behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate. Calappa crabs require stable water conditions and a suitable diet to thrive.
Feeding: These crabs are carnivorous scavengers, feeding primarily on molluscs and other small invertebrates. In captivity, provide meaty foods such as chopped seafood, frozen mysis shrimp, and specialised crustacean pellets. Feeding should be done in the evening or at night to align with their natural activity patterns.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Calappa spp. are generally reef safe with caution. While they do not typically harm corals, they may prey on small invertebrates or molluscs within the tank. Avoid housing with very small or delicate reef inhabitants.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water parameters. Ensure a sandy substrate or fine sediment layer to allow natural burrowing behaviour. Moderate water flow is preferred, mimicking their natural habitat.
Placement: Place Calappa crabs in areas with ample hiding spots such as rock crevices or caves. They are primarily nocturnal and will spend much of the day concealed.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH 8.1-8.4.
Additional Notes: Due to their nocturnal and somewhat secretive nature, these crabs may be less visible during the day. Regular monitoring is advised to ensure they are feeding well and not stressed.
