Anisotremus virginicus, commonly referred to as the Caribbean Grunt Snapper, is a large, visually impressive marine fish native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea. This species is prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its distinctive silver body marked with dark vertical bars and its peaceful nature.
Care Level: Moderate. This species requires stable water parameters and a suitably large aquarium to thrive.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species. Avoid housing with very small or timid fish to prevent stress. It is best kept singly or in pairs unless the tank is very large.
Diet: Omnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or fresh meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, and marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: Due to its large adult size and active swimming behaviour, a minimum tank size of 300 litres (approximately 80 gallons) is recommended.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Provide ample open swimming space with some rockwork or caves for shelter. This species appreciates a well-structured environment that allows natural behaviours.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 40 cm (approximately 16 inches) in captivity.
With proper care, Anisotremus virginicus makes a striking and rewarding addition to large marine aquaria, combining peaceful temperament with attractive appearance.
