Acanthurus dussumieri, known as Dussumier’s Surgeonfish, is a visually impressive tang species prized for its unique patterning and active swimming behaviour. This small specimen is perfect for marine hobbyists with adequate tank space and experience.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its size and activity level.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive; may show territorial behaviour especially towards conspecifics or similar tang species.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, requiring a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality prepared foods such as spirulina flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty treats.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is advised to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial stress.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, they may nip at certain sessile invertebrates or coral polyps.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard reef aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable to mimic natural conditions.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Ensure open swimming areas to accommodate their active nature.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 35 cm (14 inches) in the wild; smaller sizes typical in captivity.
Regular water quality maintenance and a varied diet will help maintain vibrant colours and robust health. Avoid housing with overly aggressive tank mates to reduce stress.
