Acanthurus dussumieri, also known as Dussumier’s Surgeonfish, is a visually impressive tang prized for its unique patterning and active swimming behaviour. This medium-sized marine fish is best suited to experienced hobbyists who can provide the space and care it requires.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species demands stable water parameters and a well-maintained environment.
Temperament: Generally semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards other tangs or similar-shaped fish, so careful consideration is needed when selecting tank mates.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet rich in marine algae, seaweed sheets (nori), and supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes. Occasional meaty foods can be offered but should not dominate the diet.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) to allow ample swimming space and reduce territorial behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient. No special lighting needs.
Water Flow: Moderate water movement mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. Open swimming areas are essential for this active species.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Up to 35 cm (14 inches).
This species is reef safe with caution as it may nip at some sessile invertebrates or coral polyps, especially if underfed or stressed.
Regular monitoring and maintaining excellent water quality will help ensure the health and longevity of your Acanthurus dussumieri.
