Tridacna maxima (Tear Drop) is a small, visually striking clam species prized for its vibrant mantle colours and patterns. At 2cm, this juvenile clam is suitable for marine reef aquariums with stable water parameters and moderate to strong lighting.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water chemistry and appropriate lighting to thrive.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic zooxanthellae, but benefits from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods to support growth.
Compatibility: Reef safe with most invertebrates and fish. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Lighting & Water Flow: Prefers moderate to strong lighting (LED, T5, or metal halide) to support photosynthesis. Water flow should be moderate, avoiding direct strong currents that can stress the clam.
Placement: Position on a stable rock or sandy substrate in a well-lit area of the tank. Ensure it has room to open fully without obstruction.
Origin & Size: Native to the Indo-Pacific region. Can grow up to 10-15cm in captivity.
With proper care, Tridacna maxima (Tear Drop) can be a long-lived and captivating addition to your reef aquarium.
