Tridacna maxima, commonly known as the Tear Drop clam, is a captivating small clam species prized for its vibrant mantle colours and patterns. This 3cm specimen is suitable for marine aquarium enthusiasts with some experience in invertebrate husbandry.
Care Level: Moderate care is required to maintain optimal water quality and lighting conditions. These clams rely heavily on strong lighting to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic, Tridacna maxima benefits from intense lighting but can also filter-feed on plankton and dissolved organics. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
Lighting & Water Flow: Requires strong, high-quality lighting such as metal halide or high-output LEDs to thrive. Moderate water flow is ideal to provide oxygenation without causing mantle damage.
Placement: Position on a stable rock or sandy substrate in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Ensure it is secure to prevent movement and damage.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 90 litres (20 gallons) is recommended to maintain stable water parameters.
With proper care, Tridacna maxima can be a stunning and long-lived addition to your marine reef aquarium.
