The Tear Drop Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a popular small giant clam species prized for its vivid mantle colours and patterns. At approximately 4cm, this clam is suitable for established reef aquariums where it can thrive under moderate to strong lighting and stable water parameters.
Care Requirements: This species requires moderate to high lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can enhance growth and health.
Water Flow and Placement: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while avoiding strong currents that may cause stress. Place the clam on a stable rock or sandy substrate in a well-lit area of the aquarium.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: The Tear Drop Clam is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with aggressive fish or invertebrates that may nip at its mantle.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to maintain stable water quality and provide adequate space.
Regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium levels is essential to support shell growth and overall health.
