Inimicus didactylus, commonly known as the Devil Stinger or Demon Stinger, is a medium-sized scorpionfish prized for its vivid and premium colouration. This species is a fascinating addition to a marine aquarium, offering unique behaviour and appearance. However, it requires careful husbandry and is best suited for experienced aquarists.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced care is recommended due to its venomous spines and predatory nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: Inimicus didactylus is generally solitary and territorial. It can be aggressive towards smaller fish and invertebrates, so compatibility with similarly sized or larger tank mates is advised. Avoid housing with small, peaceful species that may be seen as prey.
Diet: This species is carnivorous and thrives on a diet of meaty foods such as live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and other marine protein sources. Feeding should be done carefully to avoid stress.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide adequate space for movement and territory. The aquarium should have a sandy or fine substrate to allow natural burying behaviour, along with plenty of rockwork for hiding and ambush hunting.
Lighting and Water Flow: Moderate lighting is sufficient, mimicking natural reef conditions. Water flow should be moderate to low to accommodate the species’ preference for calm environments.
Placement: Position the fish near the bottom of the tank where it can rest partially buried and ambush prey. Ensure it has ample hiding spots among rocks and crevices.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Typically grows up to 20 cm in length.
Important Note: This species possesses venomous spines that can cause painful stings. Handle with extreme care and avoid direct contact.
