Tridacna squamosa, commonly known as the Scaly Clam, is a spectacular addition to mature marine reef aquariums. This species is renowned for its distinctive shell adorned with prominent scaly ridges and a vividly coloured mantle that can display a range of blues, greens, and browns.
These clams reach sizes of 16-20cm in this assortment, making them a medium to large invertebrate that requires a well-established tank environment. They rely heavily on photosynthesis through their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, so appropriate lighting is essential for their health and vibrant coloration.
Care and Husbandry
- Lighting: Moderate to high intensity lighting is recommended, ideally using LED or T5 systems that support photosynthetic invertebrates.
- Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is best to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while ensuring adequate gas exchange.
- Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where it can securely attach itself. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at its mantle.
- Feeding: Primarily reliant on photosynthesis, but occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialized clam foods can support growth, especially in lower light conditions.
- Compatibility: Reef safe with caution; generally peaceful but vulnerable to predation or damage from certain fish and invertebrates.
Additional Information
Ensure stable water parameters with regular monitoring of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium to support shell growth. Avoid sudden changes in lighting or water chemistry to reduce stress. This species is best suited for intermediate to advanced hobbyists with established reef systems.
