Tridacna squamosa, commonly called the Scaly Clam, is a popular and visually striking clam species prized in marine reef aquariums. These clams feature distinctive, scaly mantle edges and vibrant colouration, making them a captivating addition to mature reef systems.
Size & Availability: This listing offers assorted specimens ranging from 12 to 15cm, suitable for experienced aquarists with established tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Requires stable water parameters and strong lighting.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutrition through photosynthesis. Metal halide, T5, or high-quality LED reef lighting is recommended.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow is ideal. Avoid direct strong currents that may damage the delicate mantle tissue.
Placement: Position on a stable, hard substrate such as rockwork or specialised clam bases. Ensure the clam receives ample light and is not shaded by corals or other tank decorations.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic, but will benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Reef safe and generally peaceful. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle, such as certain butterflyfish or crabs.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres (40 gallons) is recommended to provide stable water quality and adequate space.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 30cm in optimal conditions.
With proper care, Tridacna squamosa can thrive and become a long-lasting, eye-catching feature in your marine reef aquarium.
