Tridacna squamosa, commonly known as the Scaly Clam, is a spectacular addition to any mature marine reef aquarium. Recognised for its distinctive scaly ridges on the shell and vibrant, iridescent mantle, this clam can reach sizes of up to 30cm in the wild, with our specimens offered at a healthy 21-25cm range.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and strong lighting to thrive.
Lighting Requirements: High-intensity lighting is essential, preferably metal halide or strong LED systems, to support the clam’s symbiotic zooxanthellae algae.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to prevent mantle damage while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate where it can securely attach and receive ample light. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Diet: Primarily photosynthetic via symbiotic algae, but benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or marine microalgae, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: Generally reef safe with caution. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may harm the clam. Suitable for reef tanks with peaceful tankmates.
Minimum Tank Size: A minimum of 150 litres is recommended to accommodate growth and maintain water quality.
Origin: Indo-Pacific region.
Additional Notes: Maintain stable water parameters with calcium levels around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity 8-12 dKH, and magnesium 1250-1350 ppm to support shell growth. Regular monitoring of water quality and lighting intensity will ensure long-term health.
