The Tridacna maxima (Yellow-Gold) is a stunning large clam species prized for its brilliant yellow-gold mantle and intricate patterns. At 15cm, this clam is a mature specimen suitable for established reef tanks.
Tridacna maxima hosts symbiotic zooxanthellae algae within its tissues, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Therefore, moderate to strong lighting is essential to maintain its vibrant colour and health. It thrives best under stable water parameters with a temperature range of 24-28°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, and calcium levels around 400-450 ppm.
Water flow should be moderate to ensure adequate gas exchange without causing the clam to retract excessively. Placement in the aquarium should be on a stable, hard substrate such as rock or specialised clam bases, ensuring the clam’s byssal foot can attach securely.
Feeding is generally not required if lighting and water quality are optimal, but occasional supplementation with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can support growth and vitality.
This species is reef safe and compatible with most peaceful tank inhabitants; however, care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle.
