The Tear Drop Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a visually striking giant clam species prized in marine reef aquariums for its vibrant mantle patterns and colours. At 15cm, this clam is a medium-sized specimen that adds both beauty and biological interest to a well-maintained reef tank.
Care and Husbandry: This species requires moderate to strong lighting to support its symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Supplementary feeding with phytoplankton or specialised clam foods can enhance growth and vitality.
Water quality should be stable, with parameters typical of reef aquaria: temperature 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025 SG, and low nutrient levels. Moderate water flow is ideal to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while avoiding excessive turbulence that could stress the animal.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, secure substrate or rockwork where it can receive ample light without risk of falling or being overshadowed by corals or other invertebrates. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: The Tear Drop Clam is reef safe and generally peaceful, making it suitable for mixed reef systems. However, care should be taken to ensure tankmates do not harass or damage the clam.
