The Tridacna maxima, commonly known as the Tear Drop clam, is a visually captivating invertebrate prized in the marine aquarium hobby for its vibrant mantle patterns and relatively manageable size. This specimen measures approximately 14cm and is suitable for experienced hobbyists maintaining mature reef systems.
Care Requirements: Tridacna maxima clams require moderate to high lighting to support their symbiotic zooxanthellae algae, which provide much of their nutritional needs through photosynthesis. LED or T5 lighting systems that deliver sufficient PAR levels are recommended. Water flow should be moderate; strong currents can cause the clam to retract, while stagnant water may lead to detritus accumulation.
Stable water parameters are essential: maintain temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.025 specific gravity, calcium levels around 400-450 ppm, alkalinity between 8-12 dKH, and magnesium at 1250-1350 ppm. Regular water changes and monitoring are advised to prevent nutrient spikes and maintain optimal water quality.
Feeding: While primarily reliant on photosynthesis, Tridacna maxima can benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions or during acclimation.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This clam is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. Avoid housing with predatory fish or invertebrates that may nip at the mantle. Placement should be on a stable substrate or rockwork where the clam can securely attach and receive adequate light.
With proper care, the Tear Drop clam can be a long-lived and striking addition to your marine aquarium.
