The Black Tiger Clam (Tridacna maxima) is a visually stunning giant clam species prized by marine aquarists for its bold black and white striped mantle. At approximately 13cm, this clam is a manageable size for many reef aquariums and contributes to natural filtration through its symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae.
Care and Husbandry: Tridacna maxima requires stable water parameters with a minimum tank size of 100 litres to thrive. Moderate to high lighting is essential to support the clam’s symbiotic zooxanthellae, so LED or T5 lighting systems designed for reef tanks are recommended. Water flow should be moderate; avoid strong currents that can stress the clam.
Placement is important: position the clam on a stable, hard substrate such as live rock or specialised coral plugs where it can attach securely. Ensure it receives direct light without being shaded by corals or rockwork. Avoid placing near aggressive invertebrates or fish that may nip at its mantle.
Feeding: While primarily reliant on photosynthesis, Tridacna maxima can benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially in lower light conditions.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: This species is generally reef safe and compatible with most peaceful reef inhabitants. However, care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may harm the clam.
With proper care, the Black Tiger Clam can be a long-lived and captivating addition to your marine aquarium.
