Tridacna derasa, or the Derasa Clam, is a prized invertebrate for marine reef aquariums due to its impressive size and vibrant mantle colours. At 7cm, this clam is a juvenile specimen that will grow significantly under optimal conditions.
Care Level: Moderate care is required to maintain water quality and lighting. This species is best suited for experienced hobbyists or those with stable reef systems.
Feeding: While Derasa Clams obtain much of their nutrition from photosynthetic symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) within their mantles, they benefit from supplemental feeding of phytoplankton or specialised clam foods, especially when young.
Lighting Requirements: Strong, high-quality lighting such as metal halide or high-output LED systems is essential to support photosynthesis and healthy growth.
Water Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow is ideal to prevent sediment accumulation on the clam’s mantle while ensuring adequate nutrient exchange.
Placement: Position the clam on a stable, sandy or rubble substrate in a well-lit area of the aquarium. Avoid placing near aggressive corals or fish that may nip at the mantle.
Compatibility and Reef Safety: Tridacna derasa is reef safe and generally compatible with most reef inhabitants. However, care should be taken to avoid predatory fish or invertebrates that may harm the clam.
Tank Size: A minimum tank size of 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) is recommended to provide stable water parameters and adequate space for growth.
Origin: Not Provided.
Maximum Size: Can grow up to 30cm in length under optimal conditions.
