The Flower Urchin (Toxopneustes pileolus) is a visually captivating sea urchin species prized in marine aquariums for its distinctive flower-like pedicellariae and vibrant colours. This medium-sized invertebrate adds both aesthetic appeal and biological interest to reef tanks.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. Due to its venomous spines, careful handling is essential.
Feeding: Flower Urchins are omnivorous grazers. They primarily feed on algae, detritus, and small invertebrates. Supplement their diet with algae sheets or specialised invertebrate foods to maintain health.
Compatibility & Reef Safety: With caution. While generally reef safe, their venomous spines can pose a risk to tankmates and handlers. Avoid housing with aggressive or predatory species that may stress the urchin.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 75 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and stable water conditions. Moderate water flow and stable water parameters are essential for optimal health.
Placement: Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and shelter. Position the urchin where it can access algae growth but avoid areas with strong direct flow that may cause stress.
Handling Precautions: The Flower Urchin’s spines are venomous and can cause painful stings. Always use protective gloves and tools when performing maintenance or relocating the urchin.
This species originates from the Indo-Pacific region and can reach a diameter of up to 10 cm in captivity. Regular water quality monitoring and stable conditions will help ensure longevity and vibrant health.
