Thaumoctopus mimicus, or the Mimic Octopus, is a captivating cephalopod famous for its extraordinary mimicry skills, allowing it to imitate other marine animals such as lionfish, flatfish, and sea snakes. This unique behaviour makes it a prized specimen for experienced marine aquarists.
Care Level: Advanced – Mimic octopuses require specialised care, stable water parameters, and a secure tank setup to prevent escape.
Feeding: Carnivorous diet consisting mainly of live or frozen crustaceans, small fish, and molluscs. Feeding live prey is often necessary to encourage natural hunting behaviour.
Compatibility: Due to their predatory nature and intelligence, they are best kept singly and not housed with small or slow-moving tankmates. They are generally not reef safe as they may prey on invertebrates.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 100 litres is recommended to provide adequate space and enrichment. The aquarium must have a tight-fitting lid to prevent escapes, as octopuses are known escape artists.
Water Parameters: Stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity 1.023-1.025, and excellent water quality are essential.
Placement: Provide plenty of hiding places such as PVC pipes, rock caves, and dense décor to mimic their natural habitat and reduce stress.
Reef Safety: No – Not suitable for reef tanks due to predation on invertebrates and potential damage to corals.
Owning a Thaumoctopus mimicus is a rewarding challenge for advanced hobbyists who can meet its demanding care requirements and appreciate its extraordinary behaviours.
