Thalassoma bifasciatum, commonly referred to as the Bluehead Wrasse, is a medium-sized marine fish prized for its vivid colours and lively behaviour. This species is best suited for experienced marine aquarists who can provide a spacious tank with stable water conditions.
Care Level: Moderate to Advanced. This wrasse requires consistent water quality and a secure aquarium as it is an active swimmer and may jump.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. It can be territorial, especially towards smaller or more passive tank mates. Compatibility with other wrasses and similarly sized fish should be monitored.
Reef Safety: With Caution. While generally reef safe, it may nip at small invertebrates or sessile animals, so caution is advised in reef setups.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and specialised marine pellets to ensure optimal health.
Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons). A larger tank is recommended to accommodate its active swimming behaviour.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef conditions is ideal.
Placement: Provide plenty of rockwork and hiding places. Ensure the tank has a secure lid to prevent jumping.
Origin: Western Atlantic, including the Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
