Thalassoma bifasciatum, commonly known as the Bluehead Wrasse, is a strikingly colourful fish native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea. This small variant typically reaches up to 12 cm in length and is prized for its vibrant blue head and dynamic swimming behaviour.
Care Level: Moderate to advanced. This species requires stable water parameters and a suitably sized aquarium to thrive.
Temperament: Generally peaceful but can be territorial, especially towards conspecifics or similar species. Best kept singly or in a well-established community with compatible tank mates.
Diet: Carnivorous. Feed a varied diet including high-quality frozen or live meaty foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Supplement with marine pellets or flakes formulated for carnivorous fish.
Minimum Tank Size: At least 120 litres (approximately 30 gallons) to provide ample swimming space and reduce territorial aggression.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally considered reef safe, Bluehead Wrasses may prey on small invertebrates such as shrimp or small crabs, so caution is advised in reef setups with delicate invertebrates.
Lighting and Water Flow: Standard marine aquarium lighting and moderate water flow are suitable. Ensure good water quality with stable parameters.
Placement: Mid to upper levels of the aquarium. Provide plenty of live rock for hiding and foraging.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea.
Maximum Size: Up to 12 cm (4.7 inches).
Overall, the Bluehead Wrasse is a lively and visually appealing addition to larger marine tanks, offering both colour and activity. Careful attention to diet, tank size, and compatibility will ensure a healthy and thriving specimen.
