The Thalassoma bifasciatum, often referred to as the Bluehead Wrasse, is a brightly coloured and energetic species native to the western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean Sea. This large variant can reach up to 20cm in length, making it a striking presence in suitably sized marine aquariums.
Care Level: Moderate – suitable for aquarists with some experience in marine fish husbandry.
Temperament: Semi-aggressive. While generally peaceful, it may show territorial behaviour towards smaller or similar-shaped fish.
Diet: Carnivorous – thrives on a varied diet including meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and specialised marine pellets.
Minimum Tank Size: 150 litres (40 gallons) or larger to accommodate its active swimming and territorial needs.
Reef Safety: With Caution. It may nip at small invertebrates or corals, so careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Lighting Requirements: Standard marine aquarium lighting is sufficient; no special lighting needed.
Water Flow: Moderate water flow mimicking natural reef currents is ideal.
Placement: Provide ample swimming space with plenty of live rock for hiding and establishing territories.
Origin: Western Atlantic Ocean, including Caribbean reefs.
Maximum Size: Approximately 20cm (8 inches).
When introducing the Thalassoma bifasciatum to your aquarium, ensure a well-established tank with stable water parameters. This species benefits from a varied diet and regular feeding to maintain vibrant colours and health. Compatibility with other semi-aggressive fish is generally good, but avoid housing with very small or timid species to reduce stress and aggression.
