Synanceia verrucosa, or the Warty Stonefish, is a fascinating and highly venomous scorpionfish species known for its exceptional camouflage abilities. This small variant is ideal for experienced marine aquarists who can provide the specialised care it demands.
Temperament and Compatibility: Synanceia verrucosa is generally sedentary and territorial. It is best kept singly due to its venomous spines and potential aggression towards tankmates. Avoid housing with small or slow-moving fish that may be mistaken for prey.
Diet: This species is carnivorous, feeding primarily on small fish and crustaceans. In captivity, it accepts live or frozen meaty foods such as shrimp, fish fillets, and crustaceans. Feeding should be done cautiously to avoid injury.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 120 litres is recommended to provide ample space and stable water conditions. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock and hiding places to mimic its natural reef environment and allow it to ambush prey.
Handling and Safety: Due to its venomous spines, extreme caution is necessary when maintaining the tank or performing water changes. Use tools and avoid direct contact.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow.
Origin: Native to the Indo-Pacific region, Synanceia verrucosa inhabits coral reefs and rocky substrates.
