The Scorpaenopsis spp., commonly known as scorpionfish, are a genus of venomous marine fish prized for their excellent camouflage and fascinating behaviour. This extra large variant is suitable for experienced marine aquarists who can provide the specialised care these ambush predators require.
Care Level: Due to their venomous spines and specific husbandry needs, Scorpaenopsis spp. are recommended for advanced hobbyists only.
Temperament and Compatibility: These scorpionfish are generally solitary and territorial. They are predatory and may consume smaller tankmates, so compatibility with similarly sized or larger species is advised. Avoid housing with small, peaceful fish or invertebrates that could be seen as prey.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, they thrive on a diet of live or frozen meaty foods such as shrimp, small fish, and crustaceans. Feeding should be done carefully to ensure proper nutrition and to avoid aggression.
Tank Requirements: A minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample space and stable water parameters. The aquarium should have plenty of live rock for hiding and ambush spots, mimicking their natural reef environment.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and good water quality with moderate water flow.
Reef Safety: With Caution – Scorpaenopsis spp. may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so they are not fully reef safe. They should be kept in fish-only or species-specific setups.
Additional Notes: Handle with care due to venomous spines. Use appropriate tools when performing maintenance or tank work.
