The Scorpaenopsis spp. are a genus of scorpionfish prized for their remarkable camouflage and unique appearance. These large specimens are best suited to experienced aquarists with mature marine tanks due to their specialised care needs and predatory nature.
Temperament and Compatibility: Scorpaenopsis spp. are generally solitary and territorial. They can be aggressive towards smaller tankmates, which they may view as prey. Compatibility with other large, robust fish is recommended, while small or slow-moving species should be avoided.
Diet: These scorpionfish are carnivorous ambush predators. Their diet should consist of live or frozen meaty foods such as small fish, crustaceans, and shrimp. Feeding should be done carefully to ensure they receive adequate nutrition without overfeeding.
Tank Requirements: Due to their size and behaviour, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended. The aquarium should have plenty of rockwork and hiding places to mimic their natural environment and provide security.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and pH between 8.1 and 8.4. Moderate water flow is preferred to replicate their natural habitat without causing stress.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. Scorpaenopsis spp. may prey on small invertebrates and fish, so they are generally not recommended for reef tanks containing vulnerable species.
Additional Notes: Handle with care as these fish possess venomous spines. Always use caution during maintenance or tank cleaning.
