The Siganus unimaculatus, or Foxface Rabbitfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its vibrant colours and algae-eating habits. This large variant is well-suited to experienced marine aquarists seeking a peaceful, active fish that helps maintain tank cleanliness by grazing on nuisance algae.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Foxface Rabbitfish coexists well with other non-aggressive species. It may display mild territorial behaviour but is not considered aggressive. Avoid housing with overly aggressive or fin-nipping fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality herbivore pellets, flakes, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 gallons) is recommended to provide ample swimming space and reduce stress. Provide plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots to mimic natural habitat.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable marine conditions with temperature between 24-27°C, salinity at 1.023-1.025 SG, pH 8.1-8.4, and moderate water flow to simulate reef environments.
Reef Compatibility: With caution. While generally reef safe, the Foxface Rabbitfish may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor behaviour closely if kept in reef tanks.
Additional Notes: This species possesses venomous spines as a defence mechanism; handle with care during maintenance. Regular observation and water quality monitoring will ensure a healthy, thriving specimen.
