The Siganus unimaculatus, commonly known as the Foxface Rabbitfish, is a striking and peaceful marine fish prized for its vibrant colours and algae-eating habits. This extra large specimen is perfect for experienced marine aquarists seeking a natural algae controller that adds both beauty and utility to their reef or fish-only setups.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful, the Foxface Rabbitfish coexists well with a variety of tank mates but may display mild territorial behaviour if overcrowded. It is best kept with other non-aggressive species. Caution is advised when housing with very small or slow-moving fish.
Diet: Primarily herbivorous, this species thrives on a diet rich in marine algae and seaweed. Supplement with high-quality vegetable-based flakes, pellets, and occasional meaty foods to ensure balanced nutrition.
Tank Requirements: Due to its size and active nature, a minimum tank size of 180 litres (approximately 50 US gallons) is recommended. Provide ample swimming space with live rock for grazing and hiding. Maintain stable water parameters typical of reef aquariums.
Reef Safety: With caution. While generally considered reef safe, the Foxface Rabbitfish may nip at soft corals or clam mantles, so monitor interactions closely.
Care Level: Moderate. Requires stable water conditions, a varied diet, and sufficient space to thrive.
Additional Notes: This species possesses venomous spines as a defence mechanism; handle with care during maintenance. Regular observation is recommended to ensure health and compatibility.
