Sargocentron spiniferum, commonly known as the Squirrelfish, is a visually captivating species prized for its bright red body and prominent spiny dorsal fins. This nocturnal fish is best suited for experienced hobbyists who can provide a mature aquarium environment.
Care and Husbandry: The Squirrelfish requires a minimum tank size of 150 litres to accommodate its active nocturnal behaviour and territorial nature. It thrives in tanks with plenty of rockwork and caves to provide shelter during daylight hours. This species is primarily nocturnal and may be shy during the day, so ample hiding spots are essential.
Temperament and Compatibility: Generally peaceful but territorial, Sargocentron spiniferum can coexist with other semi-aggressive fish but may show aggression towards conspecifics or similar species. It is best kept singly or in a large tank with sufficient space to reduce territorial disputes.
Diet: Carnivorous by nature, this squirrelfish feeds on small crustaceans, worms, and other meaty marine foods. A varied diet including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and high-quality marine pellets will ensure optimal health.
Reef Compatibility: With Caution. While not known to harm corals directly, its nocturnal activity and territorial behaviour may stress more delicate reef inhabitants. Careful monitoring is advised in reef setups.
Water Parameters and Environment: Maintain stable marine conditions with a temperature range of 24-27°C, salinity of 1.023-1.025 SG, and moderate water flow. Lighting should be subdued to mimic natural nocturnal conditions.
